Frederik, originally Friedrich, Ellgaard (born June 17, 1896 in Hadersleben, Denmark, † unknown) was a German-Danish painter who was mainly known for his landscape motifs.
Frederik Ellgaard was born in 1896 in Hadersleben in North Schleswig, which was then still in Germany. He was the eldest of six children of road workers Nikolai Ellgaard and Laura Ellgaard. Frederik Ellgaard became interested in painting at an early age and at the age of 19 he wanted to attend the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. But it did not come to that, he was drafted for military service in World War I, in which he fought on the German side. After the German / Danish vote (referendum in Schleswig) in 1920, his father and some of his siblings emigrated to the USA. He decided to stay and took Danish citizenship.
Frederik Ellgaard was mainly known for his oil paintings with rural and peasant idylls, which he produced in large numbers during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, for example "Plowing Farmer", "Haymaking", "Horses in the Farm" and "Grazing Horses by the River ". His nautical motifs with fishermen and sailing ships are rarer. His paintings hang in many Danish living rooms and in some Danish museums. In the 1960s his works became more expressive, such as the motif "forest path". When he did not sign his work with "Ms. Ellgaard", his pseudonym was often "Ms. Kunstell Gaardson" (Kunst Ellgaard son).
